The Guyana Fire Service in observation of Fire Prevention Week last Friday hosted a Fair and Exhibition at the D’Urban Park under the theme “Save Lives, Protect Property and Strive Towards a Greener Environment”.
The exhibition, which was the first of its kind, turned out to be a spectacular event with the presence of over 300 schoolchildren from different schools.
At the event, there were several presentations and games on behalf of the fire service. However, the highlight of the event was the live putting out of a fire at the D’Urban Park.
Spectators crowded to view the exercise. This demonstration was done by the Alberttown Fire Station that arrived at the scene of the fire in less than four minutes with a truck full of water.
In an interview, Divisional Officer of the Guyana Fire Service, Gregory Wickham, told Kaieteur News that for the first half of 2019, the Fire Service recorded over 700 fires and upon investigation the majority of the fires were deliberately set. However, with their quick response mechanisms, the Guyana Fire Service was able to successfully put out a large percentage of these fires.
Mr. Wickham further stated that the tendency where people believed that the fire trucks are always without water upon arriving at a scene is not true.
“The fire service receives calls from different places and locations. You can’t expect fire fighters to turn up at a scene with knowledge that the drain is empty or the canal is too low.
“We do go to the scene with water in the truck because that is the purpose of the Fire Service, “to Serve” and the only time we feel proud of our service is when a building or someone’s home is saved from a fire.
“However, the new system that was recently put in place ensures that upon being called to the scene of a fire, several fire trucks will be dispatched to that location so that water is not a problem,” he further stated.
At the event, there were booths by Macorp and Green Environment. Both booths displayed safety gears and educational leaflets on how to prevent a fire.
