It is now almost a year since the residents in Charity began to decry the stench emanating from a drainage trench, which runs parallel to the Charity Amazon Market.
Based on reports, the stretch of trench has been clogged up, and residents fear that its stagnant state may soon affect their health.
Earlier this year, a request was made by a stall holder to the Charity Neighbourhood Democratic Council, to have the stretch of trench desilted.
“Earlier this year, I went into the NDC here and I explain to them that this drain stink.” The thing really affecting business because some people can’t stomach the smell. Even sometimes when I sit down to eat here, I can’t eat because the drain smell high.
“The people come and they watch the drain and that was it; nothing ever done,” said the owner of a prominent business, located just opposite the drain.
According to residents living around the area, requests to have the drain cleared were made even to the Regional Democratic Council, which is superior to the NDC. The resident expressed disappointment again since nothing was done to bring relief.
When Kaieteur News visited the area yesterday, it was observed that there are persons vending on the eastern and western side of the stagnant drain. Vendors said that they are very disappointed that after a year, nothing has been done to bring them a measure of relief.
“Is sad to know that we still gotta pay rates to the NDC here, and when the time reach for them to do their work, they can’t do it. It is not only now we complaining about this drain; is long it deh like this and it really smelly. It is not healthy.”
