Supporters of the People’s Progressive Party Civic [PPP/C], turned out in their numbers yesterday as they picketed against the reported actions of the Regional Executive Officer, Denis Jaikaran.
Tensions between the parties escalated drastically last Tuesday, when the REO was brought before the police on allegations of assaulting the Regional Vice Chairman, Nandranie Coonjah.
Party supporters, who numbered about fifty, came out in support of their party as they marched in front of the office of the Regional Democratic Council.
The protest was led by the Woman’s Progressive Organisation, which is the women’s arm of the PPP/C.
Regional Chairman Devenand Ramdatt, who was also present at the time of the alleged assault, told this publication that the REO’s recent course of action is one that is disrespectful towards the council. Ramdatt went on to say, “The REO is disrespectful to the members of the Council and is timid to face statutory meetings, he consistently walks out, an indication of his unwillingness to answer to the Council and the people of our region…The recent report of assault made against him by the Regional Vice Chairman ought to be investigated swiftly”.
