Residents of Litchfield and surrounding villages on the West Coast of Berbice say they will support the government as long as several projects earmarked for their community are realised.
Though they are happy already with the government they want promises fulfilled, including the construction of an all-weather road, community ground, bleachers and several bus sheds.
Those assurances were given to Minister of Finance Winston Jordan and Attorney General Basil Williams SC who were in the community where they conducted a walk about and held a meeting with the residents.
Minister Jordan told the residents that pensions could be doubled in the next five years. He further revealed plans to increase available cash grants via the Small Business Bureau (SBB) from $250M to $500M, urging that persons take advantage of opportunities available.
“We will prepare the wicket favourably for you, but you got to bat Litchfield,” he intoned.
Attorney General Williams told the large gathering that since taking office, the government has significantly impacted positively on lives countrywide. He urged that all vote to ensure that they too can get a fair share of the gains that will continue under the Coalition Government.
The legal affairs minister further called on residents to take advantage of the technical/vocational courses available.
It was noted that a number of projects has already started, including the construction of approximately three miles of all-weather road. This will enable better access to farmlands which serve the rice and other cash crop farmers.
Additional requests were made for solar-powered streetlights, a rehabilitated NDC office, a small incinerator for disposal of medical waste and a portion of adjacent GuySuco lands for a dumpsite.
The ministers reminded the residents to get “your young people educated.”
