– “Businessman describes kind gesture as “best investment I ever made”
Businessman and owner of Game Xpress Audie Henriques says that helping Garfield Dover, a young man from an impoverished background, to attend high school was the best investment he has ever made.
A little over five years ago, the then 11-year-old Dover gained entry to St. Roses High School, after excelling at the National grade Six Examinations. It was good and bad news both at the same time.
Good because he excelled but bad because there was no way that his mother could afford to send him to the institution. Little did they know that help was on the way and it was coming sooner than they thought.
Mark Benschop through the Benschop Foundation visited the area and invited the owner of Game Xpress to assist those in need and he did. Audie and Nazeema Henriques promised to sponsor the youngster’s entire secondary and tertiary education if he kept his grades up. At the said time the young man was presented with a number of school items and $35,000 as part of this sponsorship.
Dover was supported for his entire five years of high school with books, transportation and anything else he needed to facilitate his schooling and eventually his fees to sit 14 CXC subjects were paid.
In May/June of this year, he sat the CXC Examinations and he passed all 14 subjects with grades as follows; General Maths 1; Food and Nutrition 1; Human & Social Bio 1; Chemistry 1; Integrated Science 1; Biology 1
Physics 1; IT 1; English A 1; EDPM 2; English B 2
Social Studies 2; Add maths 3 and Spanish 3.
“I am really proud of him. At first he wasn’t doing so well but then he picked up and to this day that was the best investment I ever made.”
True to his promise he will be supporting Garfield’s tertiary education as well. However, he is not certain if the youngster will go straight to the University of Guyana or pursue the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examinations (CAPE) at the Sixth Form level.
When contacted by this publication the young man’s mother Marcia Henry said that while she was proud of his accomplishments she wasn’t surprised.
“He was always a quiet child and always focused. Though I am proud of his accomplishments I am not surprised because I know he has the ability to do what he did.”
She disclosed that she was trying to get him registered into UG but he has decided that he wants to write the CAPE subjects.
She is hoping that throughout his studies he remains focused and aims high.
Garfield told Kaieteur News: “I am very excited about my accomplishments and I was expecting my results.”
Garfield said late night studying and support from his teachers and his mom contributed greatly to his success.
He is hoping to become a neurosurgeon as he is fascinated with science and the medical field at large.
