Eighteen-year-old Omesh Lakeram of La Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara, is now on life support in the Intensive Care Unit at the Georgetown Public Hospital after he was stabbed to his chest during a robbery last Thursday Evening.
According to sources, Omesh was trying to protect his neighbours’ daughters who at the time were coming home from work when the bandit followed them and attempted to rob them.
The girls who are 17 and 19, were walking along a lonely street in the area around 19:00hrs on their way home when a man on a bicycle approached them and demanded cash.
At the time, Omesh was walking in front of the girls and when he realised what was happening, he turned back and rushed at the robber. That was when the man took out a knife and stabbed him.
The suspect then escaped with $5000 in cash and the girls’ bags that contained their personal documents.
According to the mother of the girls, her daughters told her that a man rode past them on a bicycle and waited for them to reach a dark spot on the street and that was when he attacked them.
The girls said that Lakeram told them that he was ok and started to walk away but collapsed because of the wound he received. The young man was taken to the Public Hospital by his father.
The woman said that she is very upset with the La Grange Police Station because reports were made at the station concerning the matter since 02:00hrs on Friday but until now, the police have not made any contact with the family.
The family has received information from the doctors that as a result of the injuries, one of the young man’s lungs is punctured.
