DEAR EDITOR,
As of late, there has been an unfortunate high number of road fatalities, it is clear that awareness needs to be raised in order to avert these tragedies. As the number of vehicles in Guyana increases so too does the chance for accidents, this is why there is a need to take great caution when using the roadways, not only the operators of vehicles but also pedestrians need to see this as a matter of importance.
In most cases, accidents are caused as a result of negligent driving or driving under the influence of alcohol. This is one of the greatest issues, people continuing to drive while intoxicated despite seeing that it has led to the death of so many innocent people, they risk not only their own life but also the lives of others. Presently, road safety nor the punishments for reckless driving is not taken seriously, people who have been found driving under the influence of alcohol or who would have previously been involved in an accident due to their own negligence are not reprimanded in any way and are given the opportunity to continue their actions which eventually lead to the death of others.
Law and order plays an essential part in this, people continue to drive recklessly or under the influence of alcohol simply because they can easily extricate themselves from the situation, which is not right, the law must apply to all and no one should be exempted from facing trial because of their affiliations or social status.
In other cases, pedestrians may also contribute to the accidents that occur. In this modern age where people are either glued to their mobile devices or have on earphones while walking along the road, it is inevitable. The road is not a place to lose your focus texting while crossing the street and it is even more so dangerous to reduce your hearing by listening to loud music with earphones, how would it be possible to hear if there is a vehicle approaching behind you?
We all need to do our part in order to avoid more loss of lives.
Yours faithfully
Fernando Alli
