Is Guyana Ready to Embrace its Future?

DEAR EDITOR,

As Guyana awaits the decision of the Caribbean Court of Justice on the No-Confidence motion, it is prudent to consider the potential outcomes.
Based on common sense alone, and in the face of the comprehensive assessment and ruling of the Chief Justice on the matter, we can expect the CCJ to confirm the No Confidence motion as valid. Granting the remote possibility of a decision in favour of the coalition, we can safely say we have another 12 months until the next general elections.
Given that elections can be called before the end of the year as a consequence of the CCJ’s decision upholding the no-confidence motion, as Guyana considers its future for the next 20 years, are we satisfied with what we can expect from government under the PPP with Mr. Jagdeo and Irfaan Ali at the helm, or the Coalition Administration?
Factoring Granger’s health into the analysis, and this is something, which we must consider, what can we expect from any potential leader within the coalition? (Who will assume leadership of the PNC? What can we expect from him/her?) Is there anyone within the Coalition in whom we can place confidence as a national leader? Who within the Coalition has demonstrated a national vision to which all Guyanese can appeal? Seriously, what does the Coalition have to offer Guyanese as a president after Granger?
Even if some of us consider that administration under Mr. Jagdeo and his team has no real attraction, can we seriously expect a victory from the Coalition? Additionally, given that it is seen by some that the PNC considers itself the ‘protector’ of African Guyanese against what was previously experienced under the PPP, and in light of its own penchant for unfairness at national elections, have we seriously considered such an outcome? What would be our response?
These are some serious questions, which we need to consider and actively respond to. Where are the soldiers among us who are willing to stand up for other Guyanese against the bad government we are sure to expect from either the PPP under Mr. Jagdeo and Irfaan Ali, or the Coalition? It is easier to offer an alternative to their bad policies now rather than after national elections.
