The first day of the Woodpecker Products Junior National Squash Tournament at the Georgetown Club began on Monday nigh
t instead of customary Tuesday Night start.
Mohryan Baksh defeated Shiloh Asregado 11/2, 11/3, 11/1 in the Boy’s U-13 division before beating Chad DeAbreu 11/0, 11/3, 11/0.
In another Boys U-13 match, which is the largest category in this years’ competition, Joshua Verwey dominated Matthew Spooner with improved placement and tactical play. Despite Spooner being able to retrieve some great shots, Verwey earned an 11/5, 11/6, 11/1 win.
The fourth Boys U-13 bout saw a spirited effort from Dhiren Persaud against a strong Louis DaSilva.
After an 11/1 defeat, Persuad pushed to squeeze five points in the second game. DaSilva’s calm and calculated placement moved back into gear in the final game for an 11/0 finish.
Michael Alphonso and Demetrius DeAbreu took to the Court for the first U-15 match. The rapid pace and varied shot selection heated up the evening as these two skilful youngsters used each corner of the court. DeAbreu succumbed to the stronger Alphonso in three straight games, only managing to secure a few points in each game. Top seed Alphonso was triumphant 11/2, 11/2, 11/3.
The only U17 game of the evening between the left-handed pair of Gianni Carpenter and Samuel Ince-Carvalhal began with a close first clash that Carpenter recovered from a 3/7 deficit to edge ahead to a 9/8 lead before Ince-Carvalhal finished up 11/9.
Ince-Carvalhal warmed up in the second and third to dominate with powerful target shots and secured 11/2, 11/3 wins for the match.
Matches will continue throughout the week starting at 18:00hrs with two sessions on Saturday from 11:00hrs and 17hrs.
