Renal failure/diabetic patient re-admitted after abandoned by relatives

Medical staff at the West Demerara Regional Hospital is searching for the relatives of a woman who was recently returned to the institution after she was discharged. Relatives never returned to receive her.

The woman was recently returned to the hospital when members of the NGO, ‘Think Reform and Make a Difference” found her in the street living from one location to another.
Reports from credible sources are that the woman referred to as Aunt Nadira was brought to the hospital by relatives a few weeks ago. They never returned to check on her. When she was discharged a few days ago, she was left to wander the streets as no one came to collect her.
As a result Think Reform and Make a Difference’ founders Neermala Ramsaywack and Naomi Balram, when they found the woman, were forced to return her to the institution when they could not locate her relatives.
While sources at the institution could not furnish information on the persons who took the woman to the hospital, they however informed that the woman was not mentally ill and that she was being treated for kidney ailments at the facility.
She reportedly suffers from diabetes and high blood pressure as well. Hospital sources said they have reports of the woman being dropped off at the hospital in a taxi, and the taxi disappeared after.
The woman is said to have serious injury on her feet also, which became infected as a result of her diabetic condition.
‘Aunty Nadira’, as the woman is called, shared her side of the story with her good Samaritans. She said that her condition is really bad as she normally has no control of her bladder. She would use diapers since she has no control over defecating.
She added that family members had in anger burned up her mattress and mistreated her on a daily basis.
She said she lived with close relatives but could not explain the exact location where she was residing. She however indicated that she has a daughter who lives in Venezuela. Persons who found her in the streets told this publication that when they posted the incident and the woman’s photo on their Facebook page, they were contacted by the woman’s daughter, by way of text messages. They said however several attempts since to reach her after proved futile.
Members of the ‘Think Reform and Make a Difference” organisation are working closely with the hospital administration to get the woman all the help she needs. They have already started to make arrangements to have the woman accommodated. The woman will be kept in the hospital for a week before being discharged.
