DEAR EDITOR,
In a world where highlighting negativity overshadows positivity, I would like to acknowledge some noble gestures.
On May 1, your daily carried “Corporate support helps DMRC keep dialysis cost low” where it was confirmed that prominent businessman Sattaur Gafoor is subsidising $2 million monthly to avoid the increase to kidney patients for dialysis at Doobay Medical and Research Centre (DMRC).
I would like to offer a sincere thank you to Mr. Gafoor and everyone who has donated over the years and gone unnoticed. Contributing financially is critically important, as one session per dialysis currently costs about $9000. (Dialysis is not readily available at public health institution and DMRC provides at a reduced cost)
A patient is required to complete 12 sessions per month which amounts to $108,000. This does not include transportation, medication and other life necessities.
This act directly impacts those close to me, as my mother has been receiving dialysis at the Doobay Medical Centre since 2015. The incredible work of the staff there should not go unnoticed. I visited the location in 2017 and observed the care, love and dedication given to patients.
It warms my heart knowing there are still so many good people out there, and I urge all to love and care for Kidney patients. Dialysis is not an easy process, as it entails lying painfully for four hours each session. Patients are usually weak and unable to carry themselves after the rigorous sessions. I’ve witnessed my mother faint multiple times following the procedure.
In closing, I’d like to deeply thank Mr. Gafoor for his generosity. Without angel donors like him, these procedures could easily become unaffordable and limit access to people in real need.
Thanks should also be given to Dr. Doobay and all who are affiliated with this special clinic that brings relief, comfort and hope, while saving lives daily in Guyana.
