A prominent businessman on the Essequibo Coast suffered tremendous losses, when a fire of unknown origin destroyed his sawmill at Spring Garden on Easter Monday.
Based on reports, the multimillion-dollar facility which is owned by Roopan Ramotar, better known as ‘Fowl Cock,’ went up in flames sometime around 17:30 hrs.
According to one source who spoke to this publication, what initially appeared as a small flame within the compound, eventually grew into a huge blaze that engulfed the entire wooden structure.
Another individual told Kaieteur News yesterday, “some of the people from right within the area here, we try use bucket to put out the fire. That couldn’t work, because the whole place is wood and sawdust, so as fast as we try put out the fire, the more it get big.”
The fire department reportedly responded within an hour and managed to control the blaze. The sawdust within the compound, however, continued to smolder even up to late yesterday afternoon. While the fire department continues to monitor the situation, investigations are also ongoing to determine the origin of the blaze.
