Inaugural Adam Sanford Cricekt4Life T20 champions, General Auto Repairs Spartans celebrates their win. Holding trophy is Franklin Davis, Managing Director of St. Marteen Concrete.
Cul De Sac – Watched by a large crowd, local team General Auto Repairs (GAR) Spartans outclassed the Anguilla Tigers to capture the championship trophy and top prize money when the final of the inaugural Adam Sanford Cricekt4Life T20 tournament was contested at the Caribe Lumber Ballpark, St. Maarten on Sunday last.
Anguilla took first strike and posted 171 to which the Spartans responded confidently, winning by 8 wickets. Daron Cruickshank from Trinidad and Tobago led the chase with some calculated stroke play, top scoring with an unbeaten 56 (2×4 5×6) off 33 balls. Guyanese Christopher Barnwell also played well for 45 (1×4 5×6) off 24 balls. The duo adding 90 for the third wicket after Sherwin Peters retired hurt on 23 (4×4) off 22 balls and Keacy Carty went for 18 off 25 balls.
Cruickshank and Barnwell union paced the innings well to keep their team in the hunt. None of the Anguilla bowlers were spared in the onslaught and to add insult to injury, the local crowd, in its celebration, drowned out the Anguilla supporters.
Akeem Charles, who has had his struggles in the tournament, peaked at the right time with two sixes and a four to hasten the win with a rapid 19 off just seven balls. Anguilla’s total was built around Jahmar Hamilton who scored 54 (2×4 4×6) off 38 balls and a 32-ball 39 from Montcin Hodge whose knock contained three fours and two sixes.
Opener Chesney Hughes started swiftly, scoring 34 off 22 balls while Captain Terry Adams contributed 25 off 15 balls. Barnwell picked up 4-12 off four overs while Captain Kenroy David claimed 3-25.
Prior to the final, Spartans defeated the Adam Sanford All Stars by 60 runs. Barnwell blasted 109 (5×4 10×6) off 50 balls to lead Spartans to a mammoth 215-5, taking first strike. The highlight of the response was a sharp one-handed catch by Carty at backward point to dismiss former West Indies player Dwayne Smith for 18 off 11 balls and an acrobatic diving catch by Charles at short fine leg to get rid of former West Indies batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul for 8.
The dismissal of two star players sent the run chase into disarray. Spartans made sure that the lion’s share of the monetary awards stayed in St. Maarten. The team received the top cash prize of USD$8000 while Anguilla Tigers collected USD$2000 for finishing as runner-up. Barnwell was named Player-of-the-Tournament.
Among the other players that participated in the tournament which lasted for four days are Tagenarine Chanderpaul, Rahkeem Cornwall, John Eugene, Suleiman Benn, Adam Sanford and Mervyn Dillon.
Sponsors included NAGICO Insurance, St. Marteen Concrete, Marshall Motors, Delina Scott, Carib Beer, Lucozade and Mac TV (USA) which did live streaming of the matches.
