Man charged for shooting at cops walks free

Almost one year after he was charged for shooting at police ranks that were trying to arrest him, 26-year-old Keron Hinds was yesterday freed of the charge after City Magistrate Dylon Bess upheld a no-case submission made by his lawyer, Siand Dhurjon.

Apart from that, Hinds of Smyth Street, Werk-en-Rust, Georgetown, had also been accused of being in possession of a Taurus Pistol and five matching rounds when he was not the holder of a firearm license on April 16, 2018 at Fifth Street, Alberttown, Georgetown.
These charges were also dismissed by the City Magistrate.
In the no-case submission, Dhurjon argued that the prosecution failed to prove that his client had knowledge or possession of the firearm and ammunition. In relation to the charge for discharging a gun at the police ranks, Dhurjon further argued that his client never fired shots.
Hinds had been out on $400,000 bail pending trial. The Prosecution had contended that on the day in question, police received a telephone call stating that someone was discharging rounds, at the seawall. The caller gave a description of the person.
Police officers on patrol duty in the area at Fifth Street, Alberttown, Georgetown saw Hinds, who matched the description. The court heard that Hinds, upon seeing the police, started to run and a police constable pursued him. Hinds allegedly turned around when he was about 10 feet from the ranks and discharged a firearm.
Other ranks then pursued Hinds and they saw him throw an object under a car. He was then apprehended and was taken back to the car where a search was conducted under the vehicle and the firearm was discovered.
Hinds was arrested and escorted to the police station where he denied the allegations.
