Youth who severed man’s hands appeals 10-year sentence

Alvin Raghubeer, who was convicted and jailed for 10 years in 2016 for severing a man’s hands, has filed an appeal, which comes up for hearing on March 28, at the Court of Appeal.
On March 16, 2016, Raghubeer was convicted by a 12-member mixed jury of wounding Nowrattan Wilmont on October 3, 2007, with intent to maim, disfigure, disable or cause him grievous bodily harm.
He was initially indicted for attempted murder; however, the jury after deliberating for two hours, found him guilty of a lesser offence. According to reports, Wilmont and Raghubeer’s grandfather had been arguing on the day in question.
As Wilmont, who was cursing, turned to walk away, Raghubeer ran behind him and chopped him on the shoulder and left leg with a cutlass. When Wilmont attempted to bar another chop, his hand was severed.
It was reported that Raghubeer, who was 16 years of age at the time, escaped, but was later apprehended by police and charged along with his grandfather.
However, proceedings against the grandfather were discharged in the Magistrates’ Courts and Raghubeer was committed to stand trial at the High Court. The custodial sentence was handed down by Justice Jo-Ann Barlow.
