The Township of Bartica on Sunday hosted a Peace Walk around the Township as part of a Memorial Commemorative Programme in observance of the massacre that occurred in Bartica on February 17, 2008.
On this date 11 Years ago marauding Gunmen invaded Bartica and killed 12 people, three of whom were policemen.
The Peace Walk commenced around 16:25 hrs. from the Bartica Town Cenotaph Area on First Avenue and Third Street, Bartica. It wended its way around the township towards the Monument of Hope located in the Bartica Park Venue on First Street where a Memorial Rally was then hosted.
Most participants in this Peace Walk wore Black Tee Shirts with the words: “More than a Memory, Preserving the Past, Preparing the Future”, written on the front of these Black Tee Shirts and the Names of the 12 slain persons written at the back.
The marchers also carried purple balloons in their hands as they wended their way around the Township of Bartica.
Master of Ceremony for this Memorial Rally, was Mr. Holbert Knights, Deputy Regional Executive Officer and former Regional Chairman.
There were tributes to the relatives of the deceased, Cultural Presentations by pupils of Saint John the Baptist and Saint Anthony Primary Schools, and a presentation by Social Cohesion Officer, Mrs Elizabeth Moonsammy, for the Ministry of Social Cohesion.
Assistant Superintendent of Police, Mr Oswald Pitt, Officer in Charge of the Bartica Police Station, also presented tributes on behalf of the Guyana Police Force.
Mayor of Bartica Mr Gifford Marshall and Regional Chairman Mr Gordon Bradford presented their tributes in memory of the others killed.
Mr Bradford declared during his presentation that “Bartica is up, Bartica has risen and Bartica will Continue to rise”.
