Dredge owner held in Brazilian shooting death

Police have detained a Bartica dredge owner in connection with the shooting death of a Brazilian at a Kartuni Backdam, Cuyuni shop last Thursday.
The miner and the shopkeeper have alleged that the Brazilian had attacked the miner with a cutlass.
Police gave the slain man’s name as ‘Tony,’ and said that he was employed with another Bartica miner.
Investigators have seized a licensed 9mm Glock pistol with which the victim was shot.
Kaieteur News understands that the 27-year-old miner alleged that he was at a shop, which is owned by a Brazilian, when another Brazilian entered and began to behave in a disorderly manner. The shopkeeper then warned the man to desist.
It is alleged that after receiving word that a tree had fallen across a trail leading to his camp, the miner decided to sleep at the shop. He had tied his hammock and was preparing to rest when the Brazilian, who had a cutlass, attacked him.
The miner allegedly discharged a warning shot, but the Brazilian continued to advance to him. The miner reportedly then discharged three rounds at the Brazilian, fatally injuring him. Police said that the body bore a gunshot to the chest and another to the back. Online photographs showed the victim on the ground and apparently still clutching the cutlass.
Police only managed to reach the area on Monday. They are awaiting results of a postmortem.
