Churches Should Call on Government to Announce New Election Date Immediately

Dear Editor,
Your January 13 edition carried a letter by someone writing as “Apostle” Adrian Wade. I would like to know who is this person, where is his church located so I may visit or make a generous donation. Why does this person sign as “apostle?” Who made him an “apostle?” What did he do to become an “apostle?”
I noticed there is a trend in Guyana now, where every Tom, Dick and Harry, with very limited education and even lesser moral and spiritual courage or insight assuming the title of “apostle” as part of some new, vulgar, religious stratification and power hierarchy.
As a Christian myself, I would expect “Apostle” Wade to be balanced in his viewpoints. Mr. Wade comes over as an apologist for the Coalition, and seems to have the notion that the Coalition is of God and the Opposition is devil.
The balanced truth that church people need to know is that the Coalition made a lot of promises, said they would be the change, and that they would bring about national unity. Instead campaign promises were forgotten, they became the “exchange” not the change, and from early their trajectory was on the wrong track.
They squandered the enormous goodwill they had. In three and a half years, the Coalition racked up many points in the kleptocracy category crowned by the PNC party leader saying she would give jobs only to PNC people.
Despite many government ministries with the name “social” including a “social cohesion” ministry, which functioned more like the old PNC’s “Office of the General Secretary and Ministry of National Development,” the nation is most divided than ever, especially with the Coalition refusing to resign following the valid vote of “no confidence.”
Even the Speaker, usually criticized by the Opposition as favouring the Government side, could not find it in his conscience to support the Coalition’s position that the vote was not valid.
Mr. Wade said, “The Government of Guyana must protect its people at all cost and cut the head of this serpent off.” Right now, the serpent seems to be the Coalition refusing to give the date for new elections. This is the same serpent that flagrantly rigged elections in 1968, 1973, 1978 (referendum), 1980 and 1985.
In fact, the 1980 elections came seven years after the 1973 one and the 1992 election came seven years after the 1985 one. So, the PNC has a track record of not wanting to give up power. In 1992, it took a call from the White House for Desmond Hoyte to demit office after a free and fair election.
In 1997, the PNC protested the internationally certified elections and rioted in the streets, leading to the PPP cutting their term and holding elections in 2001. Losing once again, they launched their “slow fyaah, mo’ fyaah” strategy.
In 2002, mobs led by the PNC’s Bynoe invaded the Office of the President in an attempt to remove the then PPP government, and businesses were burnt down.
In 2006, they again protested their losing results and police had to open fire (rubber bullets) on protesters. In 2011 and 2015, along with the Alliance For Change, they checkmated the PPP Government with their 33 versus 32 votes. Now that they lost on a no-confidence motion in 2018 by33-32, all sorts of excuses are thrown around as to why they will not leave office.
What our good “Apostle” Wade should do, as well as those “spirit-filled” Pentecostal denominations should do – the Assemblies of God, Full Gospel Fellowship, New Testament Church of God, Elim Pentecostal, Life Spring Ministries and those independent churches, along with the Georgetown Ministers Fellowship and the Guyana Evangelical Fellowship (if they are still alive) – is make a joint national statement asking the government to announce the date of new elections and to follow the Constitution, the same way president Janet Jagan and President Ramotar cut short their terms and demitted office peacefully.
Tell the church people the truth “Apostle” Wade. Don’t be a “yes man” for the Coalition.
