Two men who were on separate charges of causing death by dangerous driving, on Friday walked out of the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts free men.
Ryan Seecharran, 23, of 361 Herstelling, East Bank Demerara, had pleaded not guilty to the charge which alleged that on June 24, at Third Street, Herstelling, he drove motorcar PVV 4911, in a manner dangerous to the public, causing the death of Kalicharran Goordial.
According to information, the victim was said to have been intoxicated and was lying on the roadway when he met his demise. It was reported that after the accident, Seecharran drove to a wash bay without rendering assistance.
It was when he was returning home that an eyewitness pointed him out to traffic ranks at the scene.
He was arrested and taken to the Providence Police Station where his vehicle was impounded.
The Guyana Police Force in a release had said that Goordial, of Creek Dam, Herstelling, was heavily under the influence of alcohol, and was lying in the centre of a street with his head about five feet from the edge of the road.
It was reported that the driver was proceeding east along the centre of the street when he suddenly turned left (north) and drove over the man’s head.
When the driver observed what had happened, he reportedly reversed on the victim’s head and fled the scene.
However, Senior Magistrate Fabayo Azore in her ruling told the court that the Prosecution was unable to prove that Seecharran drove dangerously on the day in question. Hence, she upheld the no-case submission by his lawyer, Glen Hanoman and dismissed the matter on insufficient evidence.
Meanwhile, in another matter, a taxi driver who was accused of causing the death of a pensioner, who was struck down on the public road at Houston, East Bank Demerara, last August, also had the matter against him dismissed by the same Magistrate.
It was alleged that Lennox Williams, on August 10, last, on the Houston Public Road, drove motor lorry GMM 6597 in a manner dangerous to the public, causing the death of Chitrykha Sankar. He had denied the allegation.
According to information, on the day in question, Williams was proceeding north on the eastern side of the western carriageway of the thoroughfare.
It was reported that the 69-year-old Sankar was attempting to cross the road when Williams collided with her.
Due to the collision, the woman was thrown into the air, causing her to land on the roadway.
The Magistrate told the court that throughout the trial the prosecution witnesses gave conflicting evidence as to what they saw transpired on the day in question.
She added that the Prosecution was unable to prove that Williams on the day of the incident drove the motor lorry in a dangerous manner.
Hence, she was left with no other option but to dismiss the matter against him.
Throughout the trial Williams was represented by Attorney-at-law Nigel Hughes.
