Damage to public property by misuse and plain abuse was at one time brushed aside as just another day. However, a recently completed road in Duncan Street, Newtown, and one at Canal
Number One, West Bank Demerara, are coming under the spotlight.
On Wednesday evening, a contractor decided to “walk” his mini excavator on the newly paved Duncan Street, causing damage.
According to Minister of Public Infrastructure, David Patterson, the report of the incident upset him, as it underscores the scant lack of regard that some have for the welfare of other citizens.
Taking to his Facebook page Wednesday evening, Patterson explained that until about two months ago, both Duncan and D’Abreu Streets were in a mess, almost to the point of being impassable. After considerable investments, they were both upgraded.
On Wednesday night, Patterson wrote, a contractor decided to “walk” his mini excavator on the paved road, causing damage to the surface.
“This contractor took it upon himself not only to cause a traffic jam, but also damage these roadways, because “his workshop just up the road and the lowbed transport truck, too big to turn into the street”.”
The Minister said that when it was pointed out that he was damaging the roadway, the response was priceless, “I gon get one of my boys to sweep it off in the morning”.
According to Patterson, when sanctions are applied, these same contractors will “run around” crying victimization and “some idiot” will champion their cause.
“I am really ticked off, so let the chips fall where they may,” the Minister said.
In another post, videographer at the Government’s information agency, Adrian Persaud, uploaded photos of what appears to be a greater no-no on the roads of West Bank. An excavator was seen on one, while a tractor with very sharp blades was caught crossing the Canal Number One road.
