There has been a 5% increase in serious crime in the Pomeroon/Supenaam region this year, when compared to the same period last year. This information was recently revealed in a statistical report presented by the commander of the Guyana Police Force G’ Division, Khalil Pareshram.
Pareshram revealed that there have been 4 murders in 2018 as compared to only 1 in 2017. Robbery under arms added to the statistic, since there were two separate incidents this year, as compared to none last year.
The commander pointed out that there has been a worrying increase of rape within the region. Statistic indicates that there have been 31 cases of rape within the division thus far, as compared to 12 in 2017; a 158% increase.
Pareshram explained that most of the incidents occur when the victims are left alone at home by parents. He believes that the force will need a multi-stakeholder approach in decreasing the rape increase.
Looking back at some of the Division’s accomplishments, ranks in the division recovered a total of 6 firearms thus far this year, when compared to one in 2017. Thirty nine persons were also arrested and charged for cocaine and cannabis possession during the year 2018.
In terms of eradications, a total of 12,300 cannabis sativa plants were destroyed within the region during the course of this year.
In June, 11,700 cannabis sativa plants on an 8-acre plot of land in Onderneeming were destroyed. This led to one individual being arrested and charged. In November, in Onderneeming, 600 cannabis sativa plants on a half-acre plot of land with a weight of 200 kilograms were also destroyed.
In October, a 44-year old of Lima Housing Scheme was arrested and charged based on general description by multiple victims.
These accomplishments, the commander explains, were made possible by means of continuous road blocks along with increased stop-and-search exercises. He noted that searches were conducted at suspected drug houses, while ranks were also engaged in continuous training utilizing state-of-the-art resources.
