Residents of the East Berbice-Corentyne are close to foregoing travelling to Georgetown to uplift their passports. A Passport and Immigration Office is being constructed at Garrison Road, Fort Canje, Berbice area is nearing completion. .
Work began on the building in December 2017 had should have been completed last April, but the completion date was put back due to various circumstances. Speaking at the sod turning ceremony one year ago Minister of Citizenship, Winston Felix, had stated that extending the critical Passport Service to the Region is part of a wider initiative to extend such service across Guyana.
Another reason was to reduce lengthy lines at the Georgetown Passport Office. He had assured that with the construction of the building, quality service will be delivered to persons in the region. It was also mentioned that it was the idea of the President to having capital towns in each region and a passport officer was a necessity.
The Berbice building is being constructed as part of the Ministry of The Presidency Project at a cost of $57.5 M. The contractor is M and P Investment Company.
Contractor Pierre Walcott had stated that the building was scheduled to be completed by April 2018.
Construction is also ongoing for a passport office in Linden while mechanisms are being put in place for the establishment of passport and immigration offices in Bartica, Anna Regina and Mahdia.
