West is best in Smalta girls’ peewee final

West Ruimveldt Primary School comfortably defeated North Georgetown Primary 3-1 last evening at the Ministry of Education (MoE) ground on Carifesta Avenue to emerge as the 2018 Smalta girls’ peewee football champions.

Following a month of competition, defending Champions South Ruimveldt were rampant but finalist North had put a spoke in their wheel when they defeated them in the semifinal round.
In yesterday’s final, North Georgetown were pegged as the favourites after dominating the 2017 champions and they outplayed West for most of the game before Seona France scored the first of her two goals to swing the pendulum their way.
France, who was on the score sheet in West Ruimveldt’s win over St. Pius in their semifinal clash, broke the deadlock for the new champions in the 13th minute before doubling her team’s lead in the 21st minute.
Martha France scored in the 27th minute to pull back a goal for the runners up but West’s Skipper Ashana Rajkumar gave her side some cushion with a goal one minute later to secure the victory.
Meanwhile, in the third place playoff, South Ruimveldt needled St. Pius via an extra time strike from captain, Fayon Harry, in the 43rd minute.
Presenting the Championship trophy to West Ruimveldt was Ansa Mcal’s Marketing Assistant, Olivia Chin, who posited that she was thrilled with the competitive matches each match day.
West’s coach, Jamal Pedro, was especially pleased after his boys’ side had lost to St. Pius in COURTS sponsored male peewee tournament this year.
