Holloway recommends … Closer ties between political parties; better planning for future
Former US ambassador, Perry Holloway, believes that the only way Guyana can develop faster is through closer working ties between Government and the Opposition.
In one of his last sit down meetings with media workers last week, before departing Guyana yesterday, the diplomat was asked about three pieces of advice, he would give to the country’s decision makers.
He believed that there should be closer relationship between the administration and the opposition.
“…Work more together because you don’t know who will be in power in 2020; it could be one side or the other. The last elections was only won by 5,000 votes give or take…so work more together,” the ambassador said.
The diplomat also urged Guyana to start planning long term.
He noted that the planning should not be short-terms of “two, three” years but rather for the next “10, 20, 30” years.
Another area that Guyana should concentrate on is the young generation.
“And you have to prepare the youth. This is a country where 50 percent of the population is under the age of 26. They are the future leaders… the future everything…the future journalist… the future everything of Guyana and if you are not providing them the education, the training and preparation they need, then it’s not going to work out so well.”
The ambassador would not be drawn into backing a model of governance for Guyana.

However, he did acknowledge that shared governance decreases the opposition-type behaviour.
At the end of the day, the model will depend on what the people of Guyana want, he said.
In a shift leading up to the 2015 general elections, which was held thanks to a prorogation of Parliament by the Donald Ramotar, the ABC countries (US, Britain and Canada) were vocal urging local government elections, constitutional reforms and other changes.
