Mrs. Holloway bids farewell to Help & Shelter

Mrs. Rosaura Holloway, wife of outgoing American Ambassador, said goodbye to Help and Shelter, yesterday. The organization had become part of her journey here in Guyana.
“I say goodbye to the beautiful country of Guyana and the fantastic people who live here, knowing that the Embassy Spouse and local Guyanese Group will continue to assist the Shelter and I hope others are motivated to do so as well.

“Abuse of women and children is a horrible thing and if we all do our part it can be a thing of the past. The women and children of Guyana deserve all of our respect and they deserve to live in peace and to prosper in the bright future that awaits Guyana.”
In 2016 she hosted a fund raiser in collaboration with Sonia Noel’s Foundation for Creative Arts at the residence. The funds raised were utilized to improve the condition for the shelter that houses battered women.
“When I arrived in Guyana almost three and a half years ago, I had already read about the country and some of its needs and challenges. As a result of my experience working with women in Afghanistan while I worked at the U.S. Embassy in Kabul, I decided I wanted to work with women in need in Guyana”
She thanked those who contributed in one way or the other. Their help went towards making the lives of these women and children better, and in making the future of Guyana better.
Denise Diaz, who was the co-founder of the Women’s Shelter, was the one who welcomed Mrs. Holloway to the organization and they began to work with the women and children there. Mrs. Diaz presented a collage of pictures of various events.
Ms Jackie who is the coordinator of the home expressed kind words of gratitude that made Mrs. Holloway emotional.
Sonia Noel recalled the first time she met Mr Halloway what he said to her, “I heard you do charity work. My beautiful wife is coming to Guyana soon and I need you to meet her because she enjoys helping people. I believe you ladies can do something together.”
He was right because a very sophisticated dinner a fashion show was planned not long after the meeting. Ms Noel had also collaborated in the past with Sasha Hardt, wife of former Ambassador, Brent Hardt.
Mrs. Holloway organized a number of activities to raise funds and received contributions. She started a group among the U.S. Embassy spouses as well as Guyanese local employees, and people from other companies too. This new group visited the shelter at least once a month and took them food, clothes, educational material, and personal hygiene items.
The group also brought in medical experts and health and nutrition experts to work with the women and children. The members did special celebrations for Christmas, Valentine’s Day, and Mother’s Day, trying to give the women a sense of a normal life.
Efforts to improve the physical installations by installing screens to prevent mosquitoes and bees were undertaken.
Sonia Noel said, “It was an honour working with Rosaura and I am looking forward for more collaboration in the future to contribute to humanity. We all need to constantly think about this quote: “We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean. But the ocean would be less because of that missing drop.”
Mrs. Holloway’s name with others who contributed is on a plaque on the wall at the shelter.
