A farmer who allegedly stole a boat engine worth $4M and one air box worth $1M from a wreck that was stranded on a sand bank was yesterday charged and released on $100,000 bail.
Andrew De Freitas, 60, of Covent Garden, Essequibo, appeared before Senior Magistrate Faith McGusty in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts where a larceny from vessel charge was read to him.
De Freitas denied the charge which stated that between September 14 and November 29 at Tiger Beach, North West District, he stole from a wreck that was stranded on the sand bank, one engine worth $4M and one air box worth $1M property of Simeon Tudor.
Attorney-at-Law Everton Lammy in a successful bail application, told the court that his client fully cooperated with the investigators. The lawyer added that his client has never been charge before and will return to court for the trial.
Police Prosecutor Shellon Daniels had no objection to bail being granted to De Freitas but asked that conditions be attached.
The Prosecutor added that when the defendant was arrested he handed over the stolen articles mention in the charge; hence he was arrested and taken into custody.
The Magistrate granted De Freitas bail in the sum of $100,000.
He was instructed to make his next court appearance on December 7 when he will appear before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan.
