Several passengers on the cargo boat the MV Shivita II escaped unhurt after the Northwest-bound vessel sank in the vicinity of the Waini River early yesterday.
The vessel was transporting goods from Georgetown to Mabaruma and Port Kaituma, and losses are estimated to be in the millions.
It is alleged that the boat capsized due to strong winds that caused it to drift off course while entering the channel of the Waini River.
According to officials, the Guyana Defence Force Coastguard responded to the distress call, which was received at around 05.00 hrs on Sunday.
Kaieteur News understands that a Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara resident owns the boat. It was reportedly captained by Rupert Patterson.
