Rape and robberies have increased by an overall 23 % in comparison to last year. This is according to information compiled and released by the Guyana Police Force, (GPF).
However the Police Force recorded an overall decline in serious crimes for this year. The GPF noted a 12% decline in murders –87 persons lost their lives as a result of murders compared to 99 people for the same period last year.
Robbery under arms with the use of a firearm declined by nine per cent; the police recorded 504 reports of gun robberies compared to 552 cases last year.
Similarly, robbery with the use of other instruments declined by 21% and robbery with aggravation decreased by 41% but robbery with violence increased by eight per cent. According to the statistics, larceny from persons decreased by 11% but rape increased by 10 %.
The figures for rape show a spike from 201 to 221 reports of rape. Crimes like burglary and break and enter and larceny saw a 13 % decline. The figures show an overall decline in serious crimes.
The GPF also recorded a 20 per cent increase in fatal accidents.
Meanwhile, regarding traffic management, the police said there is 20 per cent increase in fatal accidents and a 14 per cent decrease in deaths at the end of January 2018, relative to the corresponding period last year.
Serious, minor and damage accidents have decreased by 17 per cent, 15.3 per cent and 13 per cent respectively in that order.
Speeding, speeding/driving under the influence of alcohol and pedestrians crossing in the path of approaching vehicles were the main causes of the fatal accidents. Persons charged with traffic violations this year so far numbered 8,201.
