Higher Education Consortium formed by UG, other educational agencies

The University of Guyana (UG) along with twelve other educational agencies came together on Monday to sign an agreement on the Higher Education Consortium on Engineering and Mining (HECEM), an initiative that is expected to expand training and education in reference to oil and gas.
Vice-chancellor of the University of Guyana, Professor Ivelaw Griffith, conveyed that the consortium is a key factor in preparing the country for its first oil.
“It is important that as we pursue those journeys and prepare for first oil and beyond, we build a partnership with government, we build a partnership with international entities and we build a partnership with industry,” the VC said.
Guyana, with its newly found oil and gas resources, has now been tasked with the duty of managing them. However, in order to ensure sustainable management, educational avenues on these very resources for the younger demographic would need to be created. Therefore, the consortium is seeking to provide these very avenues, with its main objective aimed at fostering and promoting academic cooperation, which in turn will support the pursuit of the strategic national agenda.

HECEM, aiming at developing new curricula and joint programmes, seeks to address the nation’s growing needs as related to engineering, oil and gas. The implementation will also explore the concept of new matriculation criteria for programmes while serving as a centre for shared resources among member institutions.
Professor Griffith explained that the university, in preparation for the Petroleum Engineering Degrees, has already begun the hiring process for lecturers for course two. The university’s petroleum degree programme is slated to begin in January of 2019.
The Vice-chancellor reiterated the university’s commitment to ensuring that consistent training and development of students be meted out to the newly emerging sector.
Member institutions for HECEM include the Council for Technical and Vocational Education, Critchlow Labour College, Technical Institutes in Berbice, Essequibo, Georgetown and Linden, the Guyana Industrial Training Centre and the Ministry of Education.
HECEM was formed in consideration of the developing needs of Guyana’s natural resource industry and to provide high quality education in higher institutions. In addition to this, the initiative is expected to further develop training for the expanding oil and gas and mining and extractive industries in the country.
