Dear Editor,
Local Government is our basic level democracy. It provides a mechanism for people to participate in local public affairs and have a say in the way in which their communities are managed and the local services provided. It also enables people to learn about democracy and become active citizens. Local democracy is more than simply voting.
On average turnout in local government elections is approximately 35% less than the turnout for general elections .Local Government Elections have varied reasons to explain why people vote or not. The more empirically based reason specifically links to the level of education on Local Government and as such persons who are not aware of the importance are not likely to vote for their council.
From a political economic point of view, turnout in local government is related to “salience”. A system with high level of salience that provides incentives for citizens to invest the time and energy is necessary for a high turnout at the Local Government elections polls.
Guyanese must ensure that everyone turns out to vote for the LGE because too much is at stake.
Regards
Zamal Hussain
