Krystal Sukra admitted to the Guyana Bar

Berbician Krystal Sukra was another recent addition to the Guyana Bar following a petition made by Attorney-at-Law Rajendra Poonai last Wednesday in the Hugh Court.
Sukra, who recently graduated from the Hugh Wooding Law School in Trinidad and Tobago, was admitted to the Bar by Justice Gino Persaud, in the presence of her parents Mr. & Mrs. Benie and Marion Sukra.
Speaking on behalf of the petitioner, Poonai told the gathering that he had the opportunity to witness Sukra’s development in her early years of growth in the noble profession, citing her stint during her in-service training in his Chambers.
According to the Attorney-at-Law, ever since her in-service training, which is compulsory after the first year in Law School, he quickly realised that she was a special talent, and always knew that she would be successful in her endeavour.
Poonai disclosed that Sukra was the youngest Guyanese student to graduate at the tender age of 22 years, noting that it clearly showed how dedicated and determined she was to excel.
He firmly believes that with the same enthusiasm and commitment that was exhibited during her training, the future seems bright for her.
The former student of Queen’s College is known to have balanced academia with sports, having excelled in disciplines such as tennis and volleyball, going as far as being multiple times tennis champion as well as being a member of the national junior volleyball team that participated in the Inter-Guianas Games not so long ago.
Apart from earning her Law Degree, Sukra is also the holder of a Degree in International Relations, with a distinction, and according to her, she intends to utilise her expertise in that field as well.
During her remarks, she thanked everyone for their support, a component that was crucial for her success, and promised to do everything in her power to make the world a better place.
During her stint at Hugh Wooding, Sukra participated in the Caribbean Court of Justice’s 8th International Law Mooting Competition, where she was selected by the Department to be the Senior Counsel.
She revealed that her long term goal is to become an international human rights lawyer, preferably with a peace-keeping International Organisation such as the United Nations (UN).
“I have an unparalleled passion for international law, and this interest was fueled during my second year of my undergraduate study, where I was privileged to have as my lecturer of public international law, the esteemed and honourable Justice Duke Pollard, who is a retired Justice of the Caribbean Criminal Court of Justice, and who remains my mentor.”
She stated that she is drawn to the dynamic nature of international law, informing that it is multi faceted and addresses a wide range of issues that are of global concern, while her passion for gender equality is just as strong.
Sukra said her intention is not to be restricted, and cited the empowerment of women, which according to the UN is a basic human right that can have positive socio- economic impact if achieved, as one of her real passions, and an undertaking she intends to pursue vigorously.
She believes too many women are still the victims of domestic and sexual violence, while female empowerment and gender equality remain elusive in some parts of Guyana.
