Ammonia Gas Leak at Pritipaul prompts evacuation
Pritipaul Singh’s factory at Providence, East Bank Demerara was evacuated, yesterday afternoon, and shut down due to panic over an ammonia gas line leak.
Deputy Management director and Secretary, Vishnu Panday, told Kaieteur News that the breakage of the pipe was discovered when several employees reported smelling ammonia.
Ammonia is used by the factory for the purpose of refrigeration. The substance is irritating and corrosive, and could cause immediate burning of the nose, throat and respiratory tract if high concentrations are inhaled.
Exposure to even higher concentrations of it could cause severe injury and burns. Because of this, the employees who reported smelling the substance were rushed to Woodlands hospital, and the factory was immediately evacuated.
Panday told Kaieteur News that they don’t know what caused the leak, but that the situation has been controlled. He further noted that none of the employees sustained serious injuries.
