The transformation of D’Urban Park among other things are some proposals by National Sports Commission (NSC) to be included in its National Budget for 2019.
This was disclosed by Director of Sport Christopher Jones during an interview with the Department of Public Information. Jones said the D’Urban Park will be enhanced with fencing and sanitary blocks. “We recognize in the afternoons and in the mornings it is heavily used by the public. We want to encourage that but of course, we want to ensure that the venue itself is protected and the persons who use the space between that time are comfortable.”
He also highlighted that the NSC is looking to pave a significant portion of the inner space of the park to make it more user-friendly. “It is noteworthy to mention that when we have observances such as Mashramani and Independence we have people who would be performing and currently you have children who are performing on bricks, which is not a situation we want to see continue.”
He added that “By paving that space, in absence of events, you can simply just erect a lawn tennis net for example and several other sporting activities could be had in the entire space simultaneously.”
As it relates to synthetic tracks in Linden and Berbice, Jones said that major works would be completed this year with ground preparations, fencing and securing of the synthetic materials. Come 2019, the actual laying of the tracks will be done along with other works to complete both facilities.
