Yoanna Ramirez, Colombia’s tennis expert that is conducting the umpires’ international certification programme.
The Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) is currently hosting an International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Umpires’ programme at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH). The initiative is part of the GTTA’s development programmme and it is being held in collaboration with the Latin American Table Tennis Union (LATTU).
The four-day long event which began on Wednesday will close off with a grading exercise tomorrow and it is being conducted by Colombian Tennis expert, Yoanna Ramirez.
Training involves two components, namely the Basic Umpire Course which is funded by the GTTA and the International Umpires (IU) Course and exam which will be conducted tomorrow.
According to Linden Johnson, Secretary of the GTTA, “The IU course gives successful umpires the opportunity to become internationally accredited with the chance to participate in International competitions worldwide given the high demand for the services of IU accredited umpires for continental world circuit events among others.”
Johnson noted that there were athletes and umpires both at the novice and intermediate level attending the course with some coming from as far as region seven and eight. There were always participants from the mining town of Linden (region 10) and Essequibo joining the Georgetown based enthusiasts.
The bilingual Ramirez noted that she was happy to help the GTTA improve the level of umpiring in Guyana. “It’s a nice group, they want to learn and they ask a lot of questions. They are really easy to work with and they are learning really fast.”
Johnson explained to Kaieteur Sport that many players had been encouraged to be a part of the training since having comprehensive knowledge of the rules of the game will only augur well for the development of any player.
This is the first time that such a programme has been offered and hosted in Guyana.
