An unidentified individual of Amerindian descent died yesterday after being struck by two cars, around 01:30h, on the Ruby Public Road, East Bank Essequibo.
Witnesses claim that the unidentified man was walking in the middle of the roadway. The eyewitnesses got the impression that the individual was drunk, since he was staggering. Moments later, two speeding cars came along and both hit the man, and flung him almost a hundred feet away. A number of persons went to render assistance, but the man who looked like he was in his thirties, lay on the road motionless.
In a video recorded just after the accident occurred, one individual who was a passenger in one of the cars could be heard wailing loudly. “Me tell you fuh slow down; you nah hear”.
The police in a statement said they were “investigating a fatal accident which occurred about 01:30h (yesterday) morning on Ruby Public Road, EBE involving motor cars PRR 459 and PWW 6353 and a male pedestrian who is yet to be identified.
Initial investigations revealed that PRR 459 was proceeding west along the southern carriageway when it struck down the pedestrian who was allegedly walking in the centre of the road.
Immediately after PWW 6353 which was also proceeding in the same direction, in the rear, collided too with the pedestrian.
The pedestrian was rushed to the Leonora Cottage Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
The drivers, both of whom were found above the legal alcohol limit are in custody assisting with the investigation. The body is at Ezekiel Funeral Home awaiting identification and a post mortem examination.”
