DEAR EDITOR,
There was a bemusing ticklish call for “a Third Political Force” to fulfill a need in the political landscape of the country. This aspect of our political history should be well preserved in an Archival Museum as a matter of posterity for all generations to see and learn.
A great deal of history comes through these Letters-To-The-Editor and these contributors and columnists ought to be accorded the title of Paper Senator to the Nation. As a matter of fact, Guyana cannot continue in the future without a Legislative Senate.
Let us go to the Third Force proposition. Everyone knows the PPP as the first political Party in the then Colony. A few years later there entered the PNC. in between these two there was The National Front, followed by Mr. John Carter’s Democratic Movement.
After a furor of sorts, a social stirring brought The United Force to life. Their presence created the scenario which made Independence possible. Right now we have Third-Party-ism running the country.
Since that time there came a plethora of Parties covering the complete spectrum of theories and ideologies. Around 15 to 20 years ago there were no less than 28 parties listed to contest the General Elections. There may be more germinating right now. This tells us uncountable stories.
The recent past PPP government amalgamated with a group called CIVIC. Government at present is an amalgamation of two “Third” parties namely APNU-AFC. It is left to another day to put these groups in their chronological order. Thus we see third parties having run their full course. Party politics promote a One-Man Rule opinionated with prejudice.
For the next and future elections, do not be surprised to see a conglomeration of individuals aiming to create a revolution in representation of the people, providing the Constitution permits this possibility. This is the only avenue to true participatory Democracy. The charismatic flattery by party leader has no appeal in this day and time. Try the Peoples’ Force.
