Dear Editor,
Please allow me the opportunity to add my few cents to the discussions surrounding Charles Ramson Jr’s public declaration of his intention to secure his party’s nomination as its 2020 Presidential candidate.
As the debate rages on in our local letter pages and on Social Media it is noted that one of the reasons being put forward as to why Ramson should be the candidate is that it is time to give young people a chance. However, to my knowledge when it comes to giving young people a chance the PPP has always stood out.
But in my view it is also necessary that they have experience. On this note we must recall that Bharrat Jagdeo, though young at the time he acceded to the Presidency, already served several years as a member of the Cabinet under both Dr. and Mrs Jagan, in addition to being a member of the party’s Central Committee. The young Ramson is severely lacking in terms of his experience.
Ramson’s departure from the established procedure used by his party to nominate and elect its Presidential candidates points to impetulence and I have noted that his defenders are pointing to a similar course of action undertaken by Moses Nagamootoo. However, Mr Nagamootoo never sought to disparage the other Presidential hopefuls.
Also it was after Nagamootoo failed in his bid to become the candidate then allegations of corruption were leveled. On the other hand, Ramson started off by saying his party is corrupt, the very party he wishes to lead into the 2020 elections.
One commentator in responding to a claim that Ramson lacks Jaganite credentials, said that Bharrat Jagdeo is not a Jaganite. The purveyors of this nonsense ought to be reminded that it was Cheddi Jagan himself who demonstrated utmost confidence in Bharrat Jagdeo by appointing him junior Finance Minister whilst he was in his 20’s and later Finance Minister. This in my view is one of the most glaring affirmations of him being a Jaganite.
In closing I urge also that we be mindful of the fact that the young Ramson has suddenly found a home at Kaieteur News where he has been elevated to the status of “oil and gas expert” and given much prominence. Is it a mere coincidence that the two share a certain amount of disdain for Bharrat Jagdeo?
Sincerely Yours
Zeniah Talbot
