DEAR EDITOR,
I read an article in KN on June 20th,”The final chapter of the junk Bulldozer’. This story is centred at the heart of our failure to make any progress since independence. It is the story of how infectious and trivial corruption has become, eating away at the sinews of the concept of what is right and what is wrong.
The citizenry just don’t seem to care. The caption, “The final chapter of the junk bulldozer”, is expressive of the writer’s opinion that the REO will not be penalized for wasting State funds.
The accumulation of hundreds of stories of civil servants creaming monies from the treasury with no resultant effort to stop corrupt practices has made them conclude that any effort to stop same, will be futile and attract vindictive responses from the rulers of the State. They are right in their assumption.
If the Government has no interest in stopping corruption, it will never stop. Any attempt by the citizens to make a stand will be met by reprisals and victimization by the Government. We have seen this happen in the case of Maurice Arjoon and the PPP in the Berbice Bridge fiasco. This Coalition Government is no different. Both Governments have always been protective of their cabals. They have never been known to point an accusing finger at each other because they have similar agendas. They all know that when you point a finger, three others are pointing back at you, they all have skeletons in their closet to protect.
This REO clearly lied about the ownership of the Junk Bulldozer, evidenced by the fact that she had to sign cheques for the company to be paid long before it was brought, in the vicinity of the regional HQ, to be denied by the REO.
The article mentioned that procurement regulations were breached.
I feel that the PAC should be the body to direct SOCU to investigate, and lay charges, in wake of all the discrepancies the PAC are unearthing in the running of the business of the State. What happened to SARA after its mystery walk against corruption? Is 15 million dollars of state funds spent on a piece of scrap metal (junk bulldozer) not worth recovering? Or is SARA incapable of seeing such sins?
