Shemaine Campbell staked a strong claim to regain her Windies spot when she powered Guyana to an emphatic eight-wicket win over the Leeward Islands in the final round of their Windies Women’s Blaze T20 Championship in Jamaica last Sunday evening.
But while the 25-year-old opener ended the series with over 150 from five innings her team only managed wins against defending Champions T&T and the Leewards as Barbados emerged Champions.
Campbelle who last represented the Windies in November 2016 against India in Vijayawada, top scored with an unbeaten 28 with three fours and a six as Guyana galloped to 53-2 in 10.1 overs replying to the paltry 50 all out in 17.5 overs made by the Islanders after the Guyanese had asked them to bat on a Sabina Park track with bounce and carry.
Campbelle, who made her Windies debut in against South Africa in 2016 a day before her 18th birthday, arrived at the crease after Sheneta Grimmond (5) was trapped LBW Shawnisha Hector at 5-1 and along with Lashuna Toussaint took the score 31 before Toussaint (7) was bowled by Amanda Edwards.
Campbell then dominated the unbroken third wicket stand with the consistent Akaze Thompson (4*) whose name should be mentioned when the Windies selectors sit to pick the next Windies T20 team.
Earlier, Windies pacer Subrena Munroe trapped Eldora Sylvester (4) at 9-1 before Windies left-arm pacer Erva Giddings removed Shebani Bhaskar and Tiffany Thorpe for ducks as the Leewards slipped to 10-3 and nobody except Saneldo Willet (11), who was run out by a good piece of fielding by Kasysia Shultz at 32-6, reached double figures for the Leewards who never recovered.
Giddings bagged her second four-wicket haul as she finished with 4-18 while Munroe (1-8 from 3 overs), Tremayne Smartt (1-7 from 4) and Thompson (1-2 from 4) ensured that the Guyana pace quartet were dominant.
The 50-over format commences on Thursday and Barbados are the defending Champions.
