GFF Referee Instructor Ingram Johnson (seated) take time out for a pic during from yesterday’s session with the participants.
Over two dozen persons will today conclude a 3-day Beginners Referees Training Programme organised by the East Bank Football Association (EBFA), sponsored and facilitated by the Guyana Football Federation, GFF.
The programme, which commenced on Friday evening at the Timehri Community Centre, saw participants being introduced to the intricacies of refereeing by GFF Referee Instructor, Stanley Lancaster.
Mr. Ingram Johnson is the other GFF Instructor who is conducting the sessions with Lancaster. It has been arranged by the association to introduce a new cadre of officials to the sport at a time when most are needed as part of the GFF’s national recruitment drive aimed at tripling the amount of available officials across Guyana.
Inclusive of three females, the participants have been encouraged by EBFA President Franklin Wilson to be the best they can be and to take on the challenge with open arms, noting that it is a profession that has encouraging opportunities at the local, regional and international levels.
Gratitude was extended to the GFF for sponsoring programme and providing the requisite personnel to conduct the course which will conclude today with a test.
Lancaster commented: “We are privileged to start this exercise with the East Bank Association and I must say that the participants have responded well, this is a bunch that has been in the game for sometime so relating to the laws of the game and current methodology has not been a challenge.
I am really happy to have a bunch of referees on the East Bank because this association has been playing numerous junior tournaments and we’ve been struggling to have match officials to service the matches. With this bunch of referees that we are training, we will put together a small committee to assist with managing them and to have continuous training.”
The former FIFA Referee noted that when EBFA tournaments are played they would be able to now have a full complement of match officials to take charge.
”So thanks to the GFF President who has seen this exercise fitting and has jumped on board to support first word. I would also like to say that from the Referees Department, we have a system and structure in place to manage this bunch of referees. We have similar programmes already planned for West Berbice and Essequibo but over time we will cover the entire country.”
Sessions are being air marked to take place at least twice weekly for the new officials and Lancaster disclosed that persons who have not been a part of this course would be free to come and join the practical sessions and would be taken through the classroom paces, subsequently.
