As Guyana’s construction codes undergo review, Minister of Public Infrastructure David Patterson says they must meet international standards to ensure durability and safety.
The Minister was speaking at a leg of the American Society for Testing and Materials International (ASTM) Inaugural Caribbean Road Show which saw local attendees gaining information on sustainable construction and international building codes.
The event at the Pegasus Hotel was held in collaboration with the Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS).
“In Guyana these (ASTM) standards are used in the manufacturing and construction sector to enhance energy efficiency, water conservation, materials management, and building safety. Particularly with Guyana making steady strides towards the realization of our full oil and gas potential, ASTM international standards will play an even bigger role in ensuring the highest delivery of quality,” Minister Patterson said.
He noted that his ministry has already been following the ASTM’s standards to enhance the infrastructure sector as they play a pivotal role towards the delivery of quality roads, bridges, fences, buildings and other infrastructure works. The government is also committed to having agencies equipped with up-to-date versions of each standard, and personnel equally qualified in the use of these standards.
ASTM International is one of the world’s leading standards organizations. The roadshow includes outreach, training and education, student forums, and is focused on the growing use of ASTM International standards and ICC codes.
