DEAR EDITOR,
I have just read an article, ‘Court orders Attorney General to bring Judicial Review Act into effect’ (KN, May 29) and I am puzzled. Let me first explain. I was not in Guyana in 2010 when the Judicial Review Act was passed; nor was I then receiving KN by email, so I do not really know what was going on then.
But, are you sure that this Act was passed in 2010? Because by my calculation, there were five years between 2010 and 2015 before we had a change of government, and two years between the change of government and the filing of this case last year, 2017.
Why did not the Attorney General under the previous government bring the Act into force during those five years? Who was the then AG? Surely not Attorney Anil Nandlall? He must have been the AG before 2010. He could not have been AG after that Act was passed, failed to bring the Act into force then, but now goes to court to force the present AG to do what he did not himself do. Could he?
You see, Editor, if that was the case, then this is an example of the problem I have with all of our politicians, of whatever political party. When I do something wrong, or fail to do the right thing, that is okay. When someone on the other side does exactly what I did or failed to do, then I suddenly awake to the realization that it is wrong or a dereliction of duty. They all have very convenient consciences.
