Famous African-American social reformer Frederick Douglass once said, “It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men.”
It is in this spirit that International Children’s Outreach (ICO), a charity founded by US-based Guyanese humanitarian, Onica Charles, promotes education as means of helping underprivileged children around the globe, effectively escape from poverty.
During an interview with Kaieteur News, Charles spoke of yet another educational venture by the charity.
She disclosed that ICO’s summer school programme which begins on Monday after school closes in July will cater for about 100 primary school students that reside at Craig, East Bank Demerara, and surrounding villages.
According to Charles, the programme will run from Monday to Saturday for three weeks. It will focus on the four core subjects; Mathematics, Science, Social Studies and English. However, English will be further subdivided into Vocabulary, Composition Writing and Reading Comprehension.
Charles noted, “At ICO, it is our adamant belief that only through gaining a sound education one can escape the shackles of poverty.”
“This year, we are proud to initiate our first ever Summer School Programme which will be conducted in the village of Craig, East Bank Demerara at our newly constructed community centre.”
“The programme, like many others undertaken by ICO, will be absolutely free of cost to all children who attend.”
When asked about the expectations of the programme, Vice President of ICO, Romario St. John said, “It is our hope that our Summer School Programme will strengthen the knowledge that the students would have acquired in school during the Easter Term and furthermore to help to prepare them for the new grade level in September when school reopens.”
St. John explained that there will be a registration period for the programme since accommodation is limited.
“I will be visiting schools in Craig and surrounding areas with registration forms and looking for recommendations from the teacher to ensure that students who are really in need of this type of assistance get it.”
St. John said that the summer school programme marks the beginning of a long list of projects that will be undertaken by ICO at their recently commissioned community centre. The main agenda of the upcoming projects will be to aid the academic development of impoverished children.
He explained that ICO plans to pursue this with the help of teachers who can adapt their teaching styles and methodologies to cater for children of all ages and learning types.
