Dear Editor,
The Region One (Barima-Waini) security guards who provide security for the government’s properties and assets are paid their monthly salaries between 15 and 25 days after the ending of each month.
When they make enquiries at the relevant department of the Region One Administration they are chased away. The majority of these security guards are Amerindians who are all claiming that because of their ethnicity they are treated like dirt.
The security guards are employed directly by the Region One Administration and when they are paid their “monthly salaries” they do not receive pay slips. Each month they also have to sign a contract and they want to know why this is so.
The guards are of the opinion that their monies are used elsewhere by the regional administration which is the reason why they are currently receiving very late monthly payments unlike the public servants of Region One.
In relation to the guards the Labour Laws are violated. The guards do not receive payments for working overtime, not paid when they are sick and cannot work; and they are not entitled to vacation leave. The guards are entitled to medical benefits.
The very late monthly payments for the security guards are stressful since they have families to maintain, children to send to school and bills to pay. In fact, the shops now do not want to give the guards credit because of their extremely late monthly payments of salaries.
The Regional Executive Officer (REO) seems not to care. The Region One security guards are crying out for help and are calling for the intervention of the Minister of Communities, the Minister of Labour and his Excellency the President of Guyana Mr. David Granger for assistance so that their payment problems can come to an end.
Yours Sincerely
Peter Persaud.
