Two men were on Monday jailed, while one was remanded at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on separate drug trafficking charges.
Gordon Nedd, a 45-year old father of six, stood unrepresented before Magistrate Judy Latchman. He was sentenced to three years in jail and fined $30,000 for trafficking marijuana after pleading guilty.
He admitted that on May 4, last, at Cummings Street, Alberttown, Georgetown, he had in his possession 27 grams of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.
Nedd told the court that he works as a lumber dealer and would usually sell juice and “bomb”.
According to the facts presented by Police Prosecutor, Arvin Moore, the police officers were on usual patrols duty when they saw motorcar, PWW 7244. The car was subsequently intercepted and searched during which a quantity of seeds, stems and leaves were found in the trunk.
The prosecutor added that Nedd admitted to ownership of the drug and was escorted to the Alberttown Police Station.
Nedd told the court that on the day of incident he was sporting with his boss and workmates when the cannabis, which was wrapped was thrown into the truck of the car. He accepted the wrong he did and pleaded with the Magistrate for leniency.
Meanwhile, a 20-year-old construction worker who works in the interior was also jailed on a narcotics trafficking charge.
Kurt Steele pleaded not guilty to the charge which stated that on May 4, last, at Broad Street Georgetown, he had 45.3 grams of cannabis in his possession for trafficking.
Police Prosecutor, Arvin Moore told the court that on the day in question, Steele was seen riding a bicycle while holding a black plastic bag in his hand. He was stopped by police officers who conducted a search on him as well as the bag.
A quantity of stems, leaves and seeds suspected to be cannabis was found in the bag and Steele was taken to the Ruimveldt Police Station.
In his defence, he told the court that he saw the cannabis on the road and was going to plant it in his yard.
Steele was jailed for four years and fined $30,000.
And Leroy Holder of 25 Durban Street, Werk-en-Rust was remanded for having in his possession 1020 grams of cannabis in his celling.
The 39-year-old pleaded not guilty to the charge, which alleged on May 4 at Werk-en-Rust, he had the narcotic in his possession for trafficking. Holder is a taxi driver, who lives with his reputed wife and kids.
According to the defendant’s, Attorney-at-law, George Thomas, Holder was at home when the police came and conducted a search of the premises. He stated that his client has no knowledge of the narcotics.
Police Prosecutor, Arvin Moore told the court that on the day of the bust, the police went to the home of the defendant and found the said narcotic in the ceiling of the washroom area. Holder admitted that the cannabis belonged to him but refused to provide police with a statement, the prosecutor added.
The matter will be heard again on May 21.
