Dear Editor,
I was privileged to be a cricket administrator for once a youthful and disciplined organization called the Packer Cricket Club, housed at the Guyana Teacher’s Union, Woolford Avenue, Georgetown. At that time three youngsters – Travis Dowlin, Lennox Cush and Sean Devers— enrolled and started their cricket career. Records proved that their punctuality, performance and potentials were of a high standard.
My organization was affiliated to the Guyana Cricket Board of Control and took part in second division competitions. Our ratings were very good at that level. Because of not having the scope / improvements for Dowlin, Cush and Devers my committee advised them to join first division clubs, so that they could represent our country, Guyana and move on to West Indies team. That was successful.
I read with astonishment, that one Mr. Fizul Bacchus who is the President of Guyana Cricket Board, made some damaging remarks about Guyanese / West Indian fast bowler, Ronsford Beaton, who was called for throwing by the International Cricket Council. On Tuesday 2nd May, 2018, the ICC issued a release, indicating that the 25-year-old has failed on independent assessment and will not be permitted to bowl in international cricket.
This president seems to be ignorant of the fact and should not ridicule a potential international player on that kind of problem. A player cannot be indisciplined and then go all the way to the top. Guyana need players on the West Indies team.
A complete overhaul of the Guyana Cricket Board is coming, thanks for the recently appointed Ombudsman.
Yours -in- Sports,
Parmanand Ram
