“When you come out of prison, try to farm something else. Next time you should think about farming some oranges, pineapples and coconuts,” uttered Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman to Kenneth Thompson, who she jailed for three years.
Thompson, a farmer, of Deep South Rupununi appeared before the court yesterday and pleaded guilty to a charge of cultivating a prohibited substance. He admitted that on April 18, at Deep South Rupununi, he cultivated 12 cannabis sativa (marijuana) plants. The unrepresented farmer was jailed for three years and fined $15,000.
In disclosing the facts of the case, Police Prosecutor Arvin Moore told the court that on the day in question, ranks from the Aishalton Police Station went to a farm owned by Thompson and told him of their reason for being there. Police ranks conducted a search of the farm and discovered 12 cannabis sativa plants, which were about nine inches in length.
According to the prosecutor, Thompson admitted to police that he and his brother planted the prohibited plants. During his address to the court, Thompson disclosed that he was jailed about a year ago for a similar offence. In arriving at a sentencing for Thompson, Magistrate Latchman took into consideration his early guilty plea and a need to prevent others from commissioning the offence.
