Dear Editor,
Over the weekend GTT hosted its Innovate Summit at the Marriott Hotel in Georgetown. At this summit various local groups were allowed to demonstrate their advancements made in the IT industry in Guyana, while also others were given a chance to participate in several fun activities.
As you can imagine, GTT must have spent quite a sum in the organization and promotion of this event. While many Guyanese may see this as a great move by GTT towards investing in the populace, I urge you all not to be fooled.
There are still thousands of households across the coast of this country that are yet to receive a phone line, much less, access to the internet. Where has GTT been for the past 15 to 20 years while persons applied for phone lines, and have been left waiting?
I am not speaking of remote areas, there are villages that are literally 15 minutes from Georgetown, where the phone lines are at the beginning of the street, and yet residents have applied and have been left waiting decades for a phone line.
It is my sincere opinion that GTT has contributed to crippling the development of this country by not investing in the Telecommunications Infrastructure, all the while maintaining a monopoly here, and exporting all of their profits to their parent company. I am aware that now instead of giving phone lines out, they are running fibre optic cables, which come with a phone line included.
I am also aware that this is just another way for them to appear to be doing work, while in reality they have laid off a large number of their technicians and only have a few teams that are installing the new lines. How long more must the majority of the country wait for these technicians to finally show up? How much longer must households go without any semblance of proper and affordable internet access? Stop being hypocritical and do more for this country. Instead of inviting us to the Marriott, perhaps access to the internet would be more useful?
Jason Lowe.

(Kaieteur News) – For years, we have called May 5, “Arrival Day.” It is a name that sounds inclusive but, in reality, obscures more than it reveals.
