The quarterfinals of the Corona Futsal tournament were played on Saturday night at the National Gymnasium on Mandela Avenue and the promise of sizzling clashes was delivered and fans were left throbbing with excitement after the four matches.
The night’s play kicked off in superb fashion with a 5-4 extra time winner for Bent Street against Tiger Bay. The game was deadlocked at 2-2 after regulation time and with less than 3 minutes remaining in the final half of extra-time, Daniel Wilson completed an amazing hat-trick with a powerful long shot that slotted in perfectly into the top left corner of the goal.
The fans and Bent Street players erupted into celebration after gaining the decisive lead for the fifth time in the game.
Hat-trick hero, Wilson, exclaimed after the match that he was extremely happy with the win but noted much defensive work needs to be done to improve his team’s chances of coming away with the tournament’s top prize of $600,000.
Kelsey Benjamin scored the other two goals in Bent Street’s victory, while Deon Alfred’s hat-trick wasn’t enough for a Tiger Bay victory.
With the fans well warmed up, Leopold Street found favour with the crowd and defeated West Front Road 3-1 in the second quarterfinal of the night. Darren Benjamin, Eon Alleyne and Omallo Williams all scored once for the victors, while Hubert Pedro was the lone scorer for West Front Road.
Alpha Warriors, with top goalkeeper Richie Richardson between the sticks, defeated California Square 3-2 after penalty kicks following a 2-all deadlock at full and extra time. Lennox Cort and Vurlon Mills scored for Warriors, while Dillon Henry and David George netted California after extra time.
In the feature quarterfinal match, Sparta Boss edged past Future Stars 5-4 after extra time. Jeremy Garett’s hat-trick coupled with Sheldon Shepherd’s brace accounted for the Boss’ victory.
Meanwhile, a double from Kareem knights and solitary goals from Marvin Carter and Jamal Collier added to Future Stars’ losing tally.
