GRPA Announces Winners of Gender-based Violence Competition

Two students of the St. Joseph High School copped first and second place in the Guyana Responsible Parenthood Association (GRPA) video competition titled, ‘Speak Out, Stand Up against GBV’.—Gender-Based Violence.
The competition was part of the organisation’s youth project.
Students from the Bishops’ High School copped third place with a group presentation. The competition provided the platform for students to use their knowledge to empower and encourage each other to speak out against all forms of violence in society.
Contestants had to put together a one-minute video message on social problems such as sexual abuse, verbal/physical abuse and bullying.
They were tasked with explaining and describing those problems and offer advice to their peers on support services offered to victims and send a message to the perpetrators.
With 89 points, Tashana Ramnarine, a Grade Eight student of the St. Joseph High School won the competition.
Her presentation highlighted physical abuse in the home. She encouraged her peers to report cases of violence to their teacher or the Childcare and Protection Agency.
The eighth grader urged viewers to be on the lookout for children that may display signs of abuse and violence.
For her efforts, Ramnarine was awarded a book voucher valued $25,000 from Austin’s Bookstore. Another eighth grader of the same school, Athalia Wrong, copped second place with 84 points. She won for herself a book voucher valued $15,000 with her presentation on bullying and harassment.
A group presentation from students of the Bishops’ High School was adjudged third place with 70 points.
The students Beyonce Clarke, Ronald Kissoon, Destiny Woodman, and Quanisha Patterson were awarded a $10,000 book voucher for their presentation on bullying in schools
Videos were screened by a panel of judges and tallied out of 30 points: 10 points was awarded for comprehension of the content, 10 points for the clarity and quality of the message and another 10 points for creativity.

The Guyana Responsible Parenthood Association is a non-governmental organisation, which is dedicated to the positive sexual health for all people in Guyana. Through awareness, education, and health services based in a confidential and friendly environment, the Association promotes individual choice, family planning and quality sexual and reproductive health services.
The GRPA is also an advocate for sexual and reproductive rights, demanding full human rights for all people to live with dignity and for urgent action to address the denial of sexual and reproductive rights to marginalized groups of persons, such as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered and inter-sexed persons.
GRPA was founded in 1973 under the innovative leadership of Olga Byrne. It was established as an educational, training and family planning institution. In 1995, the Association embarked on a more holistic approach to Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR). In 2014, the GRPA merged with the Family Planning Association of Guyana (FPAG) and striving to fully meet the sexual and reproductive needs of the people of Guyana.
Today, it is recognised as a leading SRH organisation, providing efficient and optimum SRH services and serves to educate, inform, assist and advocate for sexual and reproductive rights.
The GRPA is a Member Association of the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF). It has Special Consultative Status with the UN Economic and Social Council and is a recipient of a National Award – the Medal of Service (for service of a consistently high standard).
